The win left a lot to be desired, specifically from QB Donovan McNabb and the offense. But the bottom line is that the Redskins beat a first-place team on the road. They’re staying in the playoff race despite some personnel shortcomings and inconsistent play during a transitional period. There’s no guarantee that McNabb will get comfortable and that the offense will click this season, but if that happens, it seems as though the Redskins will be positioned to take advantage of it. They’re 4-1 in the NFC and 2-0 in the division―high marks in two critical tiebreakers.
The game was one of the Redskins’ most bizarre in recent memory. The teams combined for two defensive touchdowns,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 14 punts, 4-of-23 work on third down,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eight fumbles and eight turnovers.
“A lot times they would try to double him and he was still beating it,” outside linebacker Lorenzo Alexander said. “When he goes out there and plays like that, he really just does a lot to help us.”
I wrote yesterday about how well DL Albert Haynesworth played yesterday — a fantastic sack, a great play on the goal-line to help save a touchdown, a crucial third down tackle behind the line of scrimmage of TB Chester Taylor. Haynesworth was terrific in the 20 or 25 plays he was on the field ?yesterday. Jason Reid writes that his teammates noticed and liked it.
Said receiver Santana Moss, who scored the only Redskins’ offensive touchdown with a 24-yard reception: “I’ve been a part of some crazy ones and this was a crazy one. But when you’re a part of something like this, you just want a win.”
More than his statistics, however, Haynesworth set the tone for the entire defense, which fed off his energy, players said.
“We really had an all-out blitz called,” Hall said. “Me and Kareem Moore combo’d our receiver, Johnny Knox. Out route. I guess the ball got tipped or hung up a little bit in the air and I was able to break on it. Carlos Rogers escorted me to the end zone. I was out of gas. Dead out of gas, and if he hadn’t escorted me to the end zone, I wouldn’t have made it.”
Do you like seeing DeAngelo Hall intercept Bears QB Brian Cutler. Yes? Then WATCH THIS.

Ryan O’Halloran writes about a weird and wacky win for the Redskins on a day when neither team played like they really wanted to win.

The Redskins defeated the Bears 17-14 at Soldier Field yesterday, improving their record to 4-3 and 4-1 in the NFC. The game was marked by poor quarterback play on both sides and incessant turnovers, particularly by the Bears. We begin the roundup today by looking back on yesterday’s big road conference win.
The Redskins’ four wins have come by a combined 17 points but quarterback Donovan McNabb was able to take three ‘Victory Formation,’ snaps in the final two minutes after Ryan Torain (125 yards) sealed the game with a 27-yard run.

Mike Jones has a story at TBD about DeAngelo Hall’s redemption after a tough couple of weeks. In the story, Hall describes an interception and 92-yard return for a touchdown.

Campbell sums up where the Redskins find themselves this morning:
“That was one of the sloppiest football games I’ve ever seen,” inside linebacker London Fletcher said.
“We always make it a little too close for comfort but it feels nice to know you can battle and get those wins when the game is close,” said Hall, whose final interception came with 2 minutes, 16 seconds remaining.

We summed up the game pretty thoroughly yesterday in our Quick Hitters column. READ IT.
The Redskins’ strategy to punt away from Devin Hester was the right call. Hunter Smith’s average will probably plummet because Hester is the game’s most dynamic punt returner. And with the way Washington was playing defensively, it could afford to sacrifice some field position to avoid having to corral Hester.
DeAngelo Hall’s jersey headed to Canton Portis says he will accept backup role Redskins Roundup: Tuesday is news day DeAngelo Hall responds to Jay Cutler’s remarks Shanahan: Haynesworth played best game as a Redskin

The defense limited the Bears’ offensive playmakers. And we’ll factor the punting game in this one as well. Chicago tried to get guys such as?Devin Hester and Matt Forte the ball in space,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the Redskins tackled well and prevented them from getting many yards after the catch. Forte, who averaged 12.9 yards per catch entering the game, gained 6.4 yards on his five catches and Hester was at 6.0 for his five receptions. And Johnny Knox, who averaged 21.8 coming in, finished with 14.3 yards on his six catches. That forced Chicago to drive the ball and, as we saw,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the more the Bears offense is on the field the more there’s a chance for a big negative play.

ILB Rocky McIntosh returned to the lineup yesterday after missing the Colts game due to a concussion injury. Rocky responded with a sack, a forced fumble and numerous tackles. As Jason Reid writes, Coach Mike Shanahan appreciated Rocky’s work yesterday:
The invaluable John Keim tells us why the Redskins defense worked so well yesterday.

Rich Campbell has a must-read story about the decision-making problems Donovan McNabb has had the last few weeks. It’s something I’ve written about a number of times, but you should read what Campbell has got this morning.

“When the big fella plays the way he did, it’s just great for our whole defense,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” inside linebacker and defensive captain London Fletcher said. “Albert really played great and made a lot of big plays. Yeah, he can play a little.”
“Anytime you lose a guy for a game, like we did, it sets you back a little bit,” Shanahan said. “But that’s the nature of the National Football League. You are going to lose players during the season and some guys will have to step up. … I was pleased with Rocky’s effort today.”
